Creepiest Encounter

Annmarie Throckmorton, M.A.

The creepiest encounter that I have ever had, which still gives me chills, was merely a brief, intense glance from Evil in the form of a drunken man who fixed eyes on me with a malintent that I cannot describe beyond my perception that he was relishing the thought of harming me.

I never went to bars because I have so many other things that I like to do, I do not drink, and I do not enjoy being around drunken people.  However, I had gone to this particular bar because my work group was meeting there for some informal team-building and I was willing to put an hour into it.  This was a very nice bar on the waterfront in San Diego, California and it was massively crowded that evening, shoulder to shoulder.  I was working my way through the crowd, looking for my work group, when an overwrought woman rushed up to me and told me to leave as quickly as possible.  Huh!?!  She explained that some guy/guys in the bar were drugging women and carrying them out of the bar.  Whoa!?!  "Look there goes one now!" She exclaimed.  And there indeed was a man bundling a floppy woman out of the side doors onto the veranda.  You do not have to tell me that sort of thing twice and I immediately began working my way back toward the bar entrance.  As I exited I glanced over my left shoulder and locked eyes with Evil in the form of a drunken man who clearly had been relishing the thought of harming me, a look which was now fading into disappointment as he saw me escape.
