Is China Acting Out?

Annmarie Throckmorton, M.A.

I received my Farberware stainless steel coffee percolator and was disappointed to find that Farberware is no longer a higher quality, dependable manufacturer. The lid of this made-in-china percolator fit the pot so snugly that my old hands could not get it off, and the handle had large, sharp screw hole exactly where one would put one's thumb to lift and pour the coffee pot. I promptly returned it.

It was the fourth or fifth coffee pot that I have purchased and returned this year, returning all due to function/design failures. The Ozark Trail percolator that I bought and returned had a stem too long for the pot, which caused the coffee basket to sit too high in the pot, which caused the coffee to overflow the pot when brought to a simmer.

Is China trying to exact last little bits of revenge on the West, acting out to punish our withdrawal from their shoddy merchandise? I do not buy made-in-China products unless nothing else is available, and I do not see that changing any time soon.

I finally bought a French Press coffee maker, made-in-China (nothing else available), but at least I now have a coffee maker that works.
