Temperance

I knew her for about sixty years, keeping in touch over the years despite her intemperate indulgence in drugs and alcohol. I still love her and I wish her the very best, so I will not name her, nor will I tell her story. I grieve for her here, protected in her anonymity. Thinking of the wealth and love that she lost to her addictions reminds me to be temperate in all things, to practice moderation through self-control.
