The moderns are effete.
I remember when learning to read a map was a rite of passage that allowed one to travel. I myself traveled extensively and solo, driving my compact car in the four cardinal directions, crisscrossing the United States north to the Canadian border and south to the Mexican border, west to the Pacific coast and east to the Atlantic coast, just following the lines on a Rand McNally folding map. Nowadays folks travel in minivans outfitted with global positioning systems and personal virtual assistants speaking directions, little turn by little turn, softly into their ears. I feel the same way about that "improved" mode of travel as the ancients who navigated by the stars might have felt about maps. The moderns are effete.
When we achieve space travel we will again navigate by the stars.
