Tricked By Technology?

The temperature is in the usual single digits for February in Illinois. Last week my furnace went out, this week my neighbor's furnace has gone out, as evidenced by the repair service truck parked in the deep, cold snow on their driveway. This seems to happen every year.
Most 21st century furnaces have programmable thermostats, are these servicemen programming our furnaces to stop heating in the dead of winter? Maybe pulling the same hot ruse in the dog days of summer? If so, that is a slick, evil way to make money.
